There’s one moment fans of Netflix’s The Crown has been waiting for: a walk down the aisle, complete with 25-foot train, that has a permanent place in pop culture history. Season 4 of The Crown will depict Princess Diana’s wedding to Prince Charles, as evidenced by the installment’s first trailer. And Emma Corrin, who will play the rule-breaking royal in the new season, is opening up about what it was like to slip into a replica of the gown for the first time.
“The Emanuels, who designed the original, gave us the patterns, and then it was made for me,” Corrin told British Vogue of the custom creation. “We were filming the scene when you first see her in the wedding dress—I think it was Lancaster House in London—and I had a team of about 10 people helping me put it on, because it’s massive. I walked out and everyone went completely silent. More than anything else I wear in the series, it’s so…It’s her.”

In addition to Diana’s 1981 wedding with Prince Charles, The Crown season 4 is set to feature the births of Prince William and Prince Harry. Photos of Corrin filming alongside Josh O’Connor (Prince Charles) show the couple during their 1983 tour of Australia. Another set of photos depict Diana and a toddler-aged Prince William at the 1984 Buckingham Palace Easter Egg hunt, per Good Housekeeping.
Corrin tells British Vogue that she met with Lady Di’s private secretary and watched the documentary Diana: In Her Own Words “about a hundred times” in preparation to play the late royal. “I feel I’ve got to know Diana like you would a friend,” she told the outlet. “I know that sounds really weird, but I get a great sense of companionship from her. I suppose, over time, you kind of start to patch together a sense of empathy and a sense of understanding. I love figuring people out.”

While news of Corrin’s casting in the high-profile role was originally kept hush-hush, the actress said her friends made her something to commemorate the moment. “My friends from school did this incredible thing, where they made me a scrapbook filled with all of the screenshots from our group WhatsApp, where I have said, ‘Oh my God, guys, I’ve been invited to read [for The Crown].’ Or a random conversation we’d had four years ago when I said, ‘Isn’t Diana amazing!’” Corrin recalled.
The new season of The Crown is set to hit Netflix on Sunday, November 15. Elizabeth Debicki will play Princess Diana in seasons 5 and 6 of the series, which will follow her public split from Prince Charles.
